Line Selection Options
- Connectors
Most systems use a male/male luer-lock configuration for connecting the line to the anesthesia system and monitor. Anesthesia circuits use a female luer lock (on the wye, elbow or filter) which requires a male luer lock fitting on the gas line. The other end of the line depends on the manufacturer of the monitor, but many require a male fitting as well. The connector specification is not dependent on other accessories (Nafion ® tubing, filters) which may be included with the lines.
- Length
The length is dependent on the distance from the point of attachment (anesthesia circuit) to the monitor. Most lines are specified as 8 or 10 feet long.
- Tubing Materials
Zefon anesthetic gas sampling lines are manufactured from a co-extrusion of Polyethylene (PE) and PVC where the PE forms an inner layer and the PVC comprises the outer layer. This is very important when monitoring anesthetic gases becuase of the strong dissolvents present in anesthetic gases. PVC does not resist chemicals well and use of a standard PVC tube may cause plasticizers to deteriorate and result in inaccurate monitor readings. Polyethylene (PE) is natually resistent to many chemicals and by using a co-extruded tube with PE on the inner layer the most accurate results are assured.
Note: Many monitor manufacturers will specify recommended sampling line specification in the monitor manual
- Inner Diameter (ID) Size
The ID of the tube is critical to the accuracy of the monitor. The correct ID to use is specified by the manufacturer of the monitor. The most common sizes used for anesthetic gases is .040" or .047" ID. Both sizes are stocked by Zefon.
- Nafion® Dryer Attachments
Many anesthetic gas monitoring systems require filtration of the air sample and drying of the air sample. Moisture from the air sample interferes with some methods of anesthetic gas analysis, and moisture can also destroy some of the detectors. Nafion® dryer tubing has the unique property of removing moisture from the air sample which is passing through the gas line, without affecting the gas concentration. Most monitor manufacturers will specify whether to use Nafion® or not.
- Filter Attachments
Filters which are included with the gas sampling line serve two functions. Because the filter absorbs water, moisture removal is attained. The filters have a pore size of 5.0µ and effectively prevents particulates from entering anesthitic gas monitors. Some systems will call for both a filter and Nafion ® dryer tube.
