Asbestos is composed of six naturally occurring fibrous minerals. The fibers are incredibly thin, flexible, soft, and resistant to electricity, corrosion, and heat. Asbestos is used in paper, plastic, cement, cloth, and additional materials to make them sturdier, and is also a suitable insulator. Asbestos has been widely used in thousands of American products during the 20th century, however, regulations were not implemented on asbestos until the 1970s. It has been banned in 60+ countries, but not the United States, and exposure to the fibers is the leading cause of work-related deaths in the world. Approximately 125 million people worldwide are at risk of occupational exposure to asbestos, with approximately 1.3 million of those being U.S. workers.
When the mineral fibers are ingested or inhaled, asbestos can get trapped inside the body permanently and become highly toxic. Long term exposer to asbestos eventually causes scarring, inflammation, genetic damage, pleural effusions, atelectasis, and more. Asbestos that is trapped in the body can also lead to lung cancer, ovarian cancer, laryngeal cancer, and mesothelioma, an aggressive and deadly form of cancer that is primarily caused by asbestos exposure. Treatments are available for mesothelioma, however, a cure is not yet possible.
Electricians, Insulators, Auto Mechanics, Industrial Workers, Construction Workers, Miners, Power Plant Workers, Plumbers, Boilermakers, Millers, Shipyard Workers, and Firefighters are common occupations that face the greatest risk to asbestos exposure. People who live with an asbestos worker such as their spouses, children, or other family members are at risk for secondary exposure. Secondary exposure is caused from the worker carrying asbestos fibers on their clothes, body, or tools into their home. Employers are required to adhere to all applicable NIOSH, OSHA, and AHERA standards for asbestos air monitoring to guarantee their employees are safe in their work environment.
Zefon International is able to offer the products needed to safely and efficiently collect an asbestos sample. Our asbestos Cassettes are designed and manufactured to meet all applicable NIOSH, OSHA, and AHERA standards for asbestos air monitoring. The Zefon 23 stroke high volume diaphragm area sampling pumps are economical workhorses suitable for use with asbestos PCM and TEM cassettes. Single-use cutters in our bulk sampling sets eliminate the possibilities of cross-contamination while the small bore profile reduces the number of fibers released into the air during sampling. The entire system is lightweight and fits easily into the rugged carrying case for transport between job sites. Use it to complete bulk sampling in accordance with OSHA specifications. Zefon is a longstanding partner with air quality experts around the world. With an extensive catalog of high-quality equipment and a commitment to standing behind everything we sell with exceptional customer service, we are your one-stop-shop for everything you need to monitor environmental and occupational health and safety conditions.
