Solu-Sert™ Filter Capsule: Efficient Airborne Particle Collection

The Solu-Sert™ filter capsule is a self-contained unit designed to capture all particles collected by a filter cassette. It features an MCE filter membrane sealed within a cellulose shell, creating a compact capsule. This capsule fits into a Zefon 2-Piece filter cassette, complete with a support pad. After sampling, the entire capsule is removed, digested in an acid solution, and analyzed, eliminating the need to rinse or wipe the cassette interior for "wall deposits." This makes it particularly well-suited for airborne metals analysis.

How It Works:

Air enters the filter cassette through the inlet and flows into the Solu-Sert™, where particulates are contained. The air continues through the filter membrane and exits via the cassette outlet.

Key Features:

  • Complete Sample Capture: Retains 100% of the collected sample within the capsule.
  • NIOSH Compliance: Meets NIOSH requirements by including "wall deposits" in the sampling.
  • Versatile Applications: Suitable for 15 NIOSH methods (listed below).
  • Simplified Laboratory Processing: No rinsing or wiping required for analysis.
  • Lightweight Design: The lightweight shell minimizes background interference and enhances detection limits compared to heavier shells.

Applications:

The Solu-Sert™ is effective for collecting the following contaminants:

ContaminantNIOSH Method
Aluminum 7013
Arsenic 7900
Barium 7046
Beryllium 7102
Cadmium 7048
Chromium 7024
Cobalt 7027
Copper 7029
Elements 7300, 7301, 7303, 7306
Lead 7082, 7105*
Tungsten 7074
Zinc 7030

*Note: Blanks may need to be determined prior to analysis.

Solu-Sert™ capsules have demonstrated background levels at or below the detection limit for 25 elements. Although measurable background levels of Ca, Mg, and P have been detected, these are not significant compared to Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) for compounds such as Ca(OH)₂, MgO, or H₃PO₄, as outlined in the "NIOSH Guidelines for Aerosol Sampling."

Important Note: The Solu-Sert™ is not suitable for gravimetric analysis due to the hygroscopic nature of cellulose, which affects tare weights. For gravimetric analysis, the Gravi-Sert is recommended.
