Mixed Cellulose Ester (MCE) Media sheets weighing 0.05g for mixing with Dimethyl Phthalate and Diethyl Oxalate (DP-DO) to create a clearing solution used to mount asbestos samples. This procedure was originally developed by NIOSH in the P& CAM 239 Asbestos Sampling Method (superseded by NIOSH 7400).

CLEARING SOLUTION FORMULA

**CAUTION** HAZARDOUS MATERIALS
(SPECIAL CARE SHOULD BE EXERCISED WHEN USING THESE CHEMICALS)
PLEASE REFER TO MSDS ON CHEMICALS MENTIONED BELOW FOR SAFE HANDLING

1. Add 5 milliliters of Dimethyl Phthalate

2. Add 5 milliliters of Diethyl Oxalate

3. Add one sheet (+/-0.05 gram) Filter Media 0.8µ MCE

4. Stir mixture until Filter Media has completely dissolved

5. Before each use, check solution on a prepared blank slide to ensure that contamination or crystal formation has not occurred

**NOTE** Refrigeration of the combined chemicals greatly extends the expected shelf life. Each sheet has been cut to weigh approximately 0.05 grams (0.045-0.055)
